How I Would Book It- John Cena’s Heel Turn by Tony Kegger

[Editors Note: This is the third installment of “How I Would Book It” written by Tony Kegger. Tony, like myself and Kieran, also entered the TJR Writers Search and didn’t make the final cut, but fret not, because even in defeat, we persevere and get bigger. We will not be denied. Our voices will be heard the world over.  Tony Kegger has already booked the WWE Extreme Rules PPV and the WWE Draft and if I can say so myself, he does so very eloquently. For the previous editions of “How I Would Book It” you can click here.  I’m starting to feel like Michael Buffer doing these damn introductions so it’s time for me to GTFO and shine that spotlight on Tony Kegger. Enjoy.]

Welcome to another addition of How I Would Book It. This time I am focusing on a very controversial topic…..John Cena.  Cena is considered THE top superstar in the WWE. He blows the roof off of nearly every building he performs in, but he is not loved by all. His character could use a little bit of a change and the best way to change a good guy’s character is to turn him into a heel. Here is how I would book John Cena’s heel turn.

Let me start by saying I do not like John Cena. I don’t hate him and I don’t want him to leave the WWE. Cena is alright, but in my opinion, I don’t think he is the greatest superstar in the WWE right now. I’m not saying this just because a lot of people don’t like Cena. I didn’t like Cena way before I discovered the Internet Wrestling Community and found out that Cena was not as popular as the WWE made it seem. The biggest problem I have with John Cena is that the WWE is pretty much telling you that Cena is the face of the franchise whether you agree with it or not. The WWE never really says it directly, but they put out hints. They have John Cena star in most of their movies. He is in most of their commercials. Cena is the last superstar you see in their WWE TV opener as well as the opening video for RAW. It goes on and on….the WWE has made it very clear that Cena is the reason you are a WWE fan. Unfortunately, I don’t see it that way. First of all, what ever happened to the fans being allowed to decide who is the top superstar? The fans were not supposed to like Stone Cold. Stone Cold was someone who swore a lot, drank beer, flipped the bird too often, and would attack his own boss. But the fans loved Stone Cold and he was the star of the WWE for a long time. That is the way a superstar should get to the top. Let the fans decide who is the best superstar. But the WWE does not do that with Cena. Like I said, they force you to like Cena more than anyone else. When I hear kids saying that Cena is their favorite superstar or see all of them wearing Cena gear, I’m not sure if they really like Cena or if they were brainwashed by the WWE into liking Cena. I was a kid once too. I know how easy it is for the WWE to brainwash the younger fans. All of the superstars I liked and hated were shockingly the exact same superstars the WWE wanted me to like and hate. I will admit it…I did think the New Age Outlaws were the greatest tag team in the world and I hated Kurt Angle for thinking he was better than everyone just because he won a gold medal at the Olympics. I’m older now and I am not as easy to brainwash. So the WWE can claim that John Cena is their top superstar all they want, but that is not what I see when John Cena appears on my TV.

So what is it that I do not like about John Cena? A lot of things actually. First of all, I can not stand that he does not have a gimmick. He uses his real name as his wrestling name. He does not really have a nickname. He used to be The Doctor of Thuganomics but he does not call himself that anymore. The way he acts, it seems like he could be your town’s local dentist although he would be a very big and muscular dentist. Another thing about John Cena is that he plays by the rules too much. He does not do anything that would remotely be considered illegal. Cena basically says and does what parents want to see and hear from their child’s role model. I’m surprised he hasn’t placed hidden messages into his promos like “Stay in school” and “Don’t do drugs.” He likes making jokes when interacting with his rivals. Sure The Rock made jokes too, but The Rock’s jokes were actually funny insults. The Rock calling someone a roody poo candy ass makes a bigger impact than Cena calling Sheamus a human jar of mayonnaise.  I also don’t like Cena’s “You can’t see me” catchphrase and hand gesture. It seems so lame. The “You can’t see me” catchphrase and gesture is something a kid would say and do. The Rock said it best when he returned to RAW in February:

“What are you playing, peek-a-boo? ‘You can’t see me. I can see you. You can’t–Can you see me?’ Oh believe me…we ALLLL can see you……a blind-folded, sleeping, stuck in the basement Stevie Wonder can see your monkey ass.”

And his promos are hard to listen to. I can’t stand Cena’s lame jokes that he thinks are funny and it seems that Cena thinks yelling makes his promos seem more epic, but they don’t. In fact, I like Cena’s promos better when he is speaking in a quiet but serious tone. Then there’s the fact John Cena is invincible. Take a look at Judgment Day 2009. Two of the matches were CM Punk vs. Umaga and John Cena vs. Big Show. CM Punk gets beat up by Umaga the whole match, makes you believe he is really taking a pounding, and he loses. John Cena gets beat up by Big Show the whole match and I do kinda feel Cena’s pain just like I felt Punk’s pain but Cena wins his match. Why does Cena have to look so invincible? The storyline going into that match was that Cena was less than 100% because Big Show threw him through a searchlight. Not only does Cena wrestle at the next PPV, he defeats a 500 pound monster! When Undertaker got put in a coma by Kane, he lost his next PPV match. When Stone Cold got ran over by a car at Survivor Series 1999, he missed an entire year. None of those injuries affected their popularity so why can’t Cena sell his injuries more? I can go on and on discussing things I do not like about John Cena, but you can clearly see why I don’t agree with the decision to have Cena as the name and face of the WWE so there is no need for that.

The easiest way to make Cena more likable to ALL AGES and not just brainwashed kids is by turning him heel. A change in character is a great way to re-invent someone. John Cena is not the first face to get a lot of negative heat from the fans. The Rock was booed too when he first started in the WWE. The Rock turned heel and now he’s considered one of the greatest of all-time, which is a statement I may have not been able to make if The Rock stayed a boring face his whole career. The hard part for Cena is deciding HOW to turn him heel. In my opinion, he should have turned heel when he was with Nexus. When he was with Nexus, he never wore the Nexus t-shirt because he was forced to join Nexus. Cena then had to be the referee for the Wade Barrett vs. Randy Orton match. If Barrett did not win the WWE Championship from Orton, he would fire Cena, but Cena did not want someone to win a title he did not deserve. What should have happened was have Cena screw Orton making Barrett the WWE Champion. Then Cena puts on his Nexus t-shirt as a sign that he really does want to be apart of Nexus which effectively would turn him heel. Unfortunately none of that happened. Instead, Cena let Orton win and Cena got fired (which lasted about three weeks).

I think the next great opportunity to turn Cena heel is at Wrestlemania 28. John Cena will be facing The Rock. If I was running the show, I would have John Cena enter the match as the WWE Champion. I think it might even be a good idea for Cena’s current title reign to last uninterrupted going into Wrestlemania. That’s a long time to be holding the title but the WWE needs another epic title run and having Cena hold onto the belt for that long should add value to the match against The Rock. If Cena does hold the title for that long, he will have been champ for exactly ten months when he faces The Rock. In the weeks leading up to Wrestlemania, The Rock tells Cena, “I don’t give a crap that you have held the WWE Championship for almost ten months. The Rock will still whip your monkey ass and leave Miami as the WWE Champion.” When the match finally happens, The Rock brings it like he has never brought it before. The action is back-and-forth and no matter what Cena does, he can not keep The Rock down. Cena hits The Rock with his third Attitude Adjustment of the night and The Rocks kicks out again just like he did after the first two. Cena gets frustrated. During the match, The Rock accidentally bumps into the referee and referee goes down. The Rock checks on the referee for a second and as soon as he turns his attention back on Cena, Cena hits him with the fourth Attitude Adjustment of the night. Cena notices the referee is out and heads towards ringside to grab a chair and bring it into the ring. He nails The Rock in the back with the chair several times and then places the chair on the floor of the ring. Cena picks up The Rock’s near unconscious body and delivers his fifth Attitude Adjustment, but this time directly on to the chair. Cena tosses the chair out of the ring, wakes up the referee, and pins The Rock for the three count. Since Cena is in The Rock’s hometown, there is no doubt he will get massive boos from the Miami crowd which will effectively turn Cena into a heel. Cena will come on RAW the next night saying that if he played by the rules, he would have lost his WWE Champion. Cena will also say that he is tired of being a good guy and that it felt damn good to finally go against the rules.

What happens after that point is almost irrelevant. Cena will have a completely different character and it should draw more interest from Cena’s biggest critics. Cena’s association with the Make-A-Wish Foundation won’t be a problem. Nor should the WWE worry about John Cena’s merchandise sales. They can always turn Cena back into a face and I would do it before the year is over. Cena does not need a long heel run. It can be brief and when Cena returns to being a face, he will get his younger audience back because it should not be hard for the WWE to get them liking Cena again, but he should also have several new fans thanks to his character change, and that’s how I would book John Cena’s heel turn.

thanks for posting my column and that was an awesome introduction in the editor’s note.

You’re welcome. Hopefully I can expose your stuff to people who would have overlooked it. I’m finding some true writing talent so that’s a big plus. It might be a slow process, but we all will get the recognition we deserve one way or the other if I have my way and I ALWAYS tend to get what I want, lol. Keep up the good work.

Over 100 people submitted column to TJR that will never be posted, read, and reviewed. Make sure to tell people over at TJR that if they want their column to still be posted, JCITY will give anyone a chance.

Woah, lots of new writer dudes around here, ahahaha! and JCITY bro your other site is working again, yay!

  3. May 3, 2011 at 10:20 pm

I agree with you that Nexus was the prefect way to turn Cena heel. But I don’t think the turning at Wrestlemaina would work. Cena’s the type of character who needs a slow heel turn to effectively turn the kids against him. There’s been Raw where Cena’s shown heelish qualities to The Rock on Raw, but the kids still love him the next week.

If he had the slow turn in Nexus, where he was first reluctant, then slowly became to like Nexus and enjoy what they did, he could have had a effective heel turn, but hiting Rock with a steel chair a few times at Wrestlemaina won’t make kids hate him. That’s for sure.

What would work now is a slow turn where he is at the top of his game as the top heel around the Rumble, than Rock comes in as the new top face and defeats Cena at Maina. But this is only if Rock stays a while, if not, the company’s without a top face, and no one else but Cena can be that top face on their current roster.

Overall, nice work. I don’t think your heel turn idea would work though.

    • May 4, 2011 at 4:21 am

Yeah I know it’s not the best heel turn. The fact it’s in Miami is why it might work because he should get good heat there (should be very similar to Hogan-Rock in Canada). I’m mad the whole Nexus thing didn’t work out. Every week, he never wore the Nexus T-Shirt when he was with Nexus. Having him screw Orton and then put on the T-shirt would have been perfect. THAT should have been the heel turn…perfect opportunity and it went wasted.

      • May 4, 2011 at 8:35 am

Cena seems like a heel everytime he is face to face with The Rock. When they are in the same room or in the ring Cena gets boooo’d like there is no tomorrow. A real heel turn has to have him play to the fan reaction. He is too damn happy go lucky so at the moment he is still a face even though the audience is calling out for a heel turn. I also thought the Nexus angle would have been the best way to do it, but Juan Cena can’t ever please the IWC. I think that’s one of the reasons I have recently started to be a fan of his. He knows he pisses most of us off and does it anyways. If you ask me I think Cena is already a heel. He does seem to have heel like tendencies. I agree that with Wrestlemania being in Miami that it would help the turn since mostly everyone will be on The Rock’s side. Plus I rather read a real fans booking than a former WWE writers booking. That other guy just shows why WWE sucked so much when he was there…..

  4. May 3, 2011 at 10:26 pm

WTF? I just wrote a big comment and it didn’t even post….

So I’ll sum it up. Tony, it wouldn’t work. No way. I’ll give you some critique: You put a lot of explaination into why you don’t like Cena, but little into why his heel turn would work, which it wouldn’t.

That would never turn Cena heel. He needs a slow heel turn to slowly turn kids againt him. Becuase hitting Rock with a chair won’t do that.

Next time explain why it would work, what would happen in the future, and who would take Cena’s spot.

Overall you had a strong start, but a rushed and under examined finish. WordLife.

    • May 4, 2011 at 4:27 am

Thanks for the feedback….yeah the finish was a little rushed. At first, the article was just going to be a look at Cena’s current character and where I want Cena’s character to be in the future but I decided to just stick with my “booking it” theme and lay out how I would turn Cena heel. I agree that the stuff in the beginning flowed more better than the end. To be honest, I know that I don’t like Cena’s current character but deciding how to actually fix it is the tricky part. Maybe that’s one of the reasons his heel turn has been delayed.

These columns are still a work-in-process…I’ll get it right soon. Thanks for the read….this is the kind of feedback I need and big thanks to J-City for giving me a chance to get this kind of feedback.

      • May 4, 2011 at 8:48 am

Writing with little to no feedback can sometimes be disappointing, I should know. I think you write very well and people should be aware of your stuff be it here or elsewhere. Glad I can help. 🙂

    • May 4, 2011 at 8:45 am

Comments have been acting weird, some went to spam folder. I have to figure this stuff out but for the most part everything seems to be running smoothly. I’m not banning comments or anything like that, just a malfunction I guess.

First off, I can see you’re a fan of my work, lol. We both have insane writing styles. I attribute it to the time I flew over my bike’s handlebars and crashed my head onto concrete in that freak accident I had back whem I was 11. But I digress.
I’m gonna go on record and admit something: I bought John Cens’a album back when it came out in 2005. I was a HUGE John Cena fan. Of course, as I aged, I began getting less interested in his gimmick. I would love to see him as a heel, since that would be a nice change of pace.
The argument that Cena’s merchandise sales would tank and the WWE’s stock would suffer is almost baseless. If I’m not mistaken, a large majority of those kids aren’t buying those John Cena t-shirts; mommy and daddy are! At least most of the 18-35 male demographic is employed, meaning we can acually buy all that stuff without needing an allowance.
And the WWE was well and fine before Cena came along. It’ll be fine after he retires as well. Life goes on.

    • May 4, 2011 at 8:55 am

I too hit my head on some concrete around 11-12years old when I got hit by a car and flew 50 feet in the air, breaking my right arm in the process. I wish I had a video of that I would so post it, lol.

John Cena should just come out with a Rest In Peace Osama Bin Laden shirt. That will generate instant heel heat for sure.

The problem with a Cena heel turn is the same as just about any other heel. There will always be a solid amount of fans that will cheer the heel. It won’t work. I keep telling people this: Long term, the booking has pretty much stayed the same. It’s the fanbase that has changed. The people who boo the heels wait until the heel does something bad, then boo. The people who boo the faces boo literally as soon as a simple punch is thrown. They verbally jack off to heels winning a match. That’s just one reason the Michael Cole character isn’t needed. Why do I have to hear Cole climaxing when Punk cheapshots Orton, when I can go online and read the IWC do the same thing? During the Miz/Cena cage match, after Cena got Miz in the STFU and Miz reached the ropes, he didn’t sell AT ALL!(That doesn’t ruin the match for me.) I’ve heard nobody in the IWC complain about that. But when Cena fart’s the wrong way, all you hear are tantrums. Honestly, it’s petty and it ruins the wrestling experience way more than any bad match ever could.

Oops! I meant the Mix/Cena match from RAW, not the PPV cage match. Sorry.

    • May 4, 2011 at 9:04 am

That’s why I had stopped writing about wrestling a while back. All the negativity was ruining the wrestling experience for me and I just wanted to watch without letting the jaded IWC’ers change my perception of things. If you don’t like something I rather you discuss with logic instead of “Fuck Cena”, “He can’t wrestle” blah so cliche I heard it all before, too often. I think its nice to book his heel turn after I praised the hell out of Cena in that other article. Gives the site a good balance, plus Tony gave reasons why he didn’t like Cena instead of going on a rant for the sake of ranting.

The thought has crossed my mind. I’m starting to get used to writing like this and this site feels more of a legit movement than the other one. I do like the fact that I did get it back. Now I can take the best wrestling related stuff I wrote, kill the caps and transfer them over to this site for all of those who missed it the first time. I will tweak em to be more current so even if you saw them they would be a bit different. Future on this site looks interesting.

Hi. I’m back after long months gone and I saw that the old site was down. Yet I’m glad JCITY created this one.

I was the chick who wrote about Rhodes and the Divas and the Releases. Anyways. I totally agree with you’re opinion on the Cena situation. It would do wonders for his career and the fans who are over 12 years old wouldn’t hate him that much.

Yup, the great plug that doesn’t even link back over here, lol. You missed an O in WordPress. If you do plug though try to talk about the subject at hand. I don’t want to turn people off by forcing this down people’s throat like Vince does with Cena, lol. I want to promote intellegent thought provoking comments which keeps the audience engaged and want to check back. That’s a big part of TJR’s magic and if I want to duplicate one thing from there it’s the volume of comments. So far so good. 🙂

See thats just it. Your paragraph at the bottom IS the sole reason why Cena wont turn heel. The make-a-wish foundation gives the WWE a shit load of exposure. In fact, Cena is the most sought after celebrity for that foundation. Merchandice sales will also go down. Who do you think buys the merchandise? You stated all you see is kids wearing his stuff, well there you go. Why would WWE change they’re number one face into a heel.

Look, I hated Cena ever since he came into the WWE. Never thought he was a good wrestler, never liked his gimmick….yes I hated Mr. Thugamatics. Never liked anything about the guy. Still dont. Now he’s even worse, but the fact is people cheer for him. The Rock is the peoples champ, but do you think kids who are 8-12 yrs old know who the Rock is? No. Thats why Cena still gets a huge pop when he comes out. You cant tell me my 9 month old son or my 3 yr old daughter can figure out anything about either wrestler, right? So how do you expect an 8-12 yr old to relate to the Rock, when Rock stopped wrestling over 10 yrs ago.

My thinking is this. WWE was weak. WWE needed to create that spark, like SCSA. So what did they do? Not change Cena, but change Orton. Orton was a guy who never really got over BIG. He was always behind Batista, HHH, Taker, Edge, and Cena. The perfect move was to make him into the next SCSA. Now he has the ability to change brands and control that brand.

Cena will never change. Period. Even when he fights the Rock it will be Attitude vs. New Age. Rock will lose to Cena and finally pass the torch off creating a huge popularity boost for Cena.

    • May 4, 2011 at 12:01 pm

I think if Cena beats The Rock, be it clean or by the way Tony booked it people will resent him more than ever. If they plan a heel turn or not I think the audience will eventually force the WWE’s hand and make it happen. I just hope it’s sooner rather than later, even though John Cena is awesome in his current role.

    • May 4, 2011 at 2:33 pm

I agree with that. That’s why if they did make him heel, it would be the shortest heel run in history. They don’t need a several year heel run. It can be 3 months…even less. Just do something different with Cena instead of the same old shit. As fun as it is to hate on Cena, I would like to actually root for the guy but I struggle with reasons to do so right now. I want them to do something different with Cena even if it is just temporary. It’s not like fans will still boo him when he goes face again. The Rock was a heel in the last stages of his career and he’s hotter than ever right now. WWE fans have a short memory. When Cena goes face again, his character will still be very popular…hopefully more popular than ever. The way he is now…he’ll NEVER come close to the legacy Stone Cold had.

ugh….reading this back, I’m seeing little things I could have fixed like comparing The Rock’s “Homeless Power Ranger” joke to Cena’s “human jar of mayonnaise” instead of using The Rock’s “roody poo candy ass” line. And I referred to the WWE title as a belt at one point….I should quit just for writing that. Still trying to perfect my articles….Thanks everyone (Brian, Max, Jcity, Shaman, Ana_zackpack, capt. smooth, Hannington Dia, Alan…I think I got everyone) for the feedback. Tony Kegger :

Brian :See thats just it.

Cena has turned from Thugonomics to Hugonomics.

Shaman’s Harvest :I know. The thing is I don’t really read the site anymore. I just comment to plug this site, and if I can’t do that I don’t really need to go on there anymore. I don’t really care if I get banned for a little while.

    Gotcha!

Yeah, John’s really been a jerk to me lately. I’ve just been looking for somewhere to talk wrestling, and it seems like here’s the place. And, it’s clear he just hates J. People plug their blogs on his facebook and site all the time, and he’s yet to say anything to any of them. Forget TJR, this is the new revolution. The Infamous.

    • May 6, 2011 at 10:54 am

Lol, me and John are cool, its AJ that hates me. I was told never to comment the headlines because AJ got butthurt because he called me out on some shit and I made him look stupid with actual facts. Even with that being said I had wrote my piece on AJ and would just like to let that die. I dont want to promote a US vs THEM type feud so fuck it. We can benefit from being civil, drama will only get us big for a bit then people will leave or be turned off.I rather avoid that kinda shit but that doesn’t mean that I don;t want to be better than TJR. In time we will be just as big I just hope people are patient because it wont happen overnight. INFAMOUS 4LYFE.

Thanks man. I miss writing, and I don’t know if you guys remember my stuff, but hopefully it was good enough to want back. Either way, you’re getting it. lol. It’s like a new wrestling promotion… Sure, there’s some big dogs in the park, even bigger than TJR, but if we perservere and work hard, we can be recognized for rising above, raising the bar, and being Infamous.

I remeber your stuff. Can’t say I read more than one column. It wasn’t you…it’s that you reviewed TNA. I’m sorry you had to go through that by the way.

I actually really enjoyed TNA for a very long Time, I’ve been a fan since the PPV days. IT’s not great now, but I’ve seen worse. It’s the focus of my new columns. I’ve been on killer overtime this week, so hopefully I can get something to J this weekend.

        • May 6, 2011 at 11:04 am

Take your time, there is never any pressure to have things in by a certain date. When you feel it is ready then send it in until then try not to let work kick your ass too much. 🙂

      • May 6, 2011 at 10:56 am

Modern Native was the one who tried to show TNA in a positive light unlike everyone else that tried their hand at reviewing Impact. I welcome his stuff with open arms. I like TNA so its good to have that balance because i have been talking about WWE mostly.

Another great column and another great writer. I think the writing in a lot of the TJR columns were good if these are the rejected ones. Also, I would stick with this site. The evolution needs to keep going forward, not backwards.

Also, I would try and get an evaluation I wrote about The Undertaker posted somewhere if I wasn’t such a pussy haha.

I know I’m like a day late, but I think I have a great idea for a Cena heel turn. It can be really gradual and easy. You have it stem out of jealousy for the Rock and the praise he receives. “Cena doesn’t understand, he’s been here through all these years, through thick and thin and the Rock shows up out of nowhere and he gets all their love and adoration? His own 2 hour show dedicated to him? What is it he has to do to prove to them he’s just as worthy as the Rock?” You then have Cena go forward trying to “prove himself to the fans which ultimately would lead to him doing really stupid stuff, like just beating the crap out of faces and showing a little heel like tendencies. Just bring out his natural desire to be loved and exploit, leading to their showdown where Cena tries to prove himself over and over again, going so far as to cheat, and unable to put Rock down for a 3 count. The Rock wins the match and Cena finally understands why everyone loves him so much, and respects him again, snapping Cena out of his funk and back into the land of being a face while Rock fades into the background again.

    • May 6, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Feel free to be late to any post, they are here for your entertainment or hatred but yea no matter if Cena turns he would have fans that love him. If he goes heel then all the people that hate him would love him and all the people that love him will hate him. It kinda serves no purpose since Cena always had half the crowd behind him and half against. All they would be doing is changing one half for the other.

Yeah no kidding. There’s no pleasing everyone when it comes to Cena. Hey JCity, I just sent you an article that we had communicated via email about, the top 5/bottom 5 thing. Just so you know, thanks for takin the time to even read it:

I enjoyed the column. I was a fan of Census when he was a heel. I don’t mind him now but I wish they would do something fresh with his character instead of always being predictable. I think a heel turn would do that.
