An Infamous Smackdown Review (5/6/11) – by Shaman’s Harvest

Let me first say that I know Smackdown spoilers were running wilder than Hulk Hogan on Viagra this week, so there’s a good chance most of you already know what happened, or at least knew what went down in the main event before you even watched this.  I tried to avoid spoilers, but I couldn’t help the fact that I got a mini spoiler from Chris Jericho on Twitter. You know, I don’t even know where I’m going with this, let’s just get to Smackdown

Before we got to the arena there was a little video package that had a quick showing of Christian’s career, starting with pictures of him and Edge from younger days, some tag team action, and finally, Christian grabbing the World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules. I myself am so happy Christian finally got his chance, being from my hometown I can’t help but cheer for him. I thought, and others did too, that Christian would just be one of the guys, like Mr. Perfect, who were always so close, but never managed to win a World Championship. I’m sure glad I was wrong. Now, did he only get the title because he was at the right place at the right time? Yeah, he did. The thing is if Edge’s retirement didn’t happen at the time him and Christian were back together, especially when there was such a shallow talent roster, Christian wouldn’t have gotten the championship. The thing is everyone knows Christian deserves it. He was at the right place at the right time, but good things happen to those who wait. After 17 years of wrestling, he deserved it.

Ok, now to the actual show. Christian’s music hit and he came down to a big pop, walking down the aisle with the World Title, just letting it all sink in. He got to the ring and thanked everyone who supported him over his entire career, and he called the World Heavyweight Championship the Peeps Title. Christian thanked Edge for all he’s done to help him over his career and said “Without Edge, there wouldn’t be a Christian”. That has some truth to it as Christian wrestled his WWE tryout match against Edge. Edge already had a WWE contract at the time, so the important thing to him was making Christian look good. It’s all on Edge’s “Decade of Decadence” DVD as a bonus feature, if you’re interested. Christian was about to continue, when what happens? What could be the worst possible thing to ruin Christian’s celebration? Yes, Mark freaking Henry.

He came down to the ring wiggling and chuckling and said he wants a title shot. Someone tell Mark he isn’t famous enough for that. Christian said the belt wasn’t made of chocolate then told him to go take care of his bastard hand child. Then The Great Khali comes out….what the hell? Who let the jobbers lose? Khali said “Sufi jsjdf jsjdj jskej hfbs keif Najee kejwks bfnwka nfjwkx jewwo.” I don’t know. Christian said this was a damn freakshow then Randy Orton came out.

He just came out to say hi, he doesn’t want a title shot. Well he didn’t say that, but you know…why can’t they just say hi once in a while? T-Lo came out and said the WWE Universe could pick who they wanted Christian to face for the Championship. Do I even need to say who won that? It’s Christian vs Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event.

Back from commercial Khali and Singh were walking backstage, Singh said Khali will get his shot eventually. He better PGing not! Backstage they meet up with FCW Superstar Jinder Mahal. I don’t know too much about him besides that he was born in Calgary, but will likely be billed from India. Based on their conversation last week Jinder and Khali know each other and Jinder seems to be a big deal. I have no idea what else they said, except for the fact that Mahal sees something wrong with Singh dressing his older brother in dresses on Raw. What’s wrong with that, Jinder? Live a little.

Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan
Alright! This is both Bryan’s and Sheamus’s Smackdown debut and I expect big things from both of them on Smackdown. Sheamus is back in his Irish green by the way. Sheamus controlled most of the match after Bryan missed a dive onto Sheamus on the outside of the ring. Sheamus dominated Bryan with power moves until Bryan looked like he was coming back with a missile drop kick. Sheamus tried to come back with his over the top rope shoulder block, but Bryan reversed it with a Lebell lock which Sheamus got out of and rolled out of the ring. Bryan tried another dive on the outside, but Sheamus caught him with a Brouge Kick, then another Brogue Kick in the ring for good measure and the victory.

Winner: Sheamus (about 10 minutes)

This was a good match between these two. They’ve faced each other a bunch of times on Raw, so this wasn’t very different. Sheamus managed to look dominate without squashing Bryan, who will get his chance another time.

Back from commercial and here comes Cody Rhodes and his bag boys. If that mask is so ugly, why not just take it off when he isn’t wrestling? Whatever. Cody said the same thing he said last week, he lost to Rey, but still exposed him, and we’re so ugly it offends him. I agree, you people are gross. Shave your damn legs for (insert the name of who/whatever you believe in) sake! He gave some people paper bags and left. There was really no point to this, it sounded like he accidentally read last weeks script again. I think they did this just to get him on TV and stall until they find something new for him.

The Big Show vs Ezekiel Jackson
Both Kane and The Corre were at ringside. This wasn’t a long match, but Zeke was very impressive. He hit another body slam on Show and even held him up there for a few seconds. Before that he did an awesome looking back body drop. Wow. I can’t believe how strong he is. The end came when all hell broke loose outside the ring and Big Show got distracted, Zeke hit a clothesline on Show and that was all she wrote.

Winner: Ezekiel Jackson (about 3 minutes)

Post match, Zeke walked away from The Corre and left alone while the Corre looked confused at ringside. Anyone else notice this is exactly what happened to Mason Ryan on Raw? My guess is they both leave their stables and form a tag team together to take down Kane and The Big Show. It might work, it’s worth a try at least. I like Jackson better than Ryan by the way.

Back from commercial they recapped The Rock’s birthday. I’m not recapping a recap. Commercial again.

Layla vs. Alicia Fox

Layla came out to Michelle McCool’s music and my God she was looking beautiful. She was wearing her beautiful purple pants that hug her hips and show off her sexy waistline. She’s got the purple bikini/top thingy on that squeezes her big firm breasts. Her body has a beautiful all over tan and she is rocking the curvy look pretty well. Her hair looks as good as ever and you wouldn’t guess that she’s a day over 25 with that beautiful face. Then Alicia came out, she looked nice too.

Winner: Layla (not long enough) [Editors Note: That’s what she said, huh?]

Post match, The Boogeyman’s music hit! Actually, it was Kharma, who’s on Raw…but we don’t need to mention that. Thank God Layla escaped, I don’t want her boobs busted. Kharma gave Fox an Implant Buster, laughed, then left. Alicia was wearing this little skirt, so imagine if she had no panties on while Kharma was holding her up for the Implant Buster. Damn, that would have been epic.

Backstage Corre provokes Jackson in his locker room. They tell Jackson it’s not working out and he’s not a team player. First Darren Young, Michael Tarver, now Zeke! Barrett keeps kicking out all the black guys. Jackson figures it out and throws the first punch at Wade, Corre attacks Zeke after that. Well….Wade and Slater attack Jackson, but it looked like Gabriel was attacking Slater. He punched him in the back a bunch of time and even pushed him over. They all pushed a huge grey towel bin on Zeke, then Wade said “It was a pleasure working with you Zeke,” and The Corre left.

Sin Cara vs. Tyson Kidd
Chavo Guerrero was on commentary because he wanted to scout his fellow Latino. They had the funky lights on again during this match. My guess is to create more of a circus atmosphere to make Cara look more acrobatic. This match was pretty one sided as Tyson was just there to make Sin Cara look good, which he did better than any other of Cara’s opponents so far. Cara won with his top rope flip thingy. I’ll call it the Shamansault.

Winner: Sin Cara (about 3 minutes)

Post match, Chavo came into the ring and shook hands with Cara. A rivalry or mentorship between Cara and Chavo could be good. It would really benefit both guys. As for Tyson…at least he was on TV.

Off topic, one of my buddies who only watches wrestling every once in a while asked me today why they brought Batista back and called him Mason Ryan. It’s amazing how similar they look.

I think Todd Grisham interviewed Teddy Long about something. I’m sure it wasn’t important.

Christian (c) vs. Randy Orton – World Heavyweight Championship Match
The match between these two has been the talk of the IWC for a few days now. Needless to say they got a decent amount of time and it was a good match. The match was evenly matched, but Randy had the advantage over Christian for a good part of the match. Christian went for the Kill Switch a few times, but Orton kept reversing it, as Christian tried his best to avoid the RKO. Christian even kicked out of Randy’s big DDT and Orton sold shock after that. In the ending Christian went for the middle rope roll up pin he does, which Randy reversed into a sweet looking RKO to win the World Title.

Winner and New World Heavyweight Champion – Randy Orton (about 17 minutes)

This match was bitter-sweet (oxymoron) for me because on one end I’m a big fan of our rugged bronze warrior and was happy to see him win the World Heavyweight Championship again for the first time since 2004, but on the other hand…Christian’s moment is over. I know a lot of people are going to say this will lead to something more, but this was Christian’s first World Heavyweigh Championship run. He has busted his ass in this business for 17 years and has been overlooked almost his entire career, now he finally got his title and it gets taken away after only a few days. This was his first run, it was supposed to be special, it’s what he deserved and it’s what the people wanted. I can see two reasons for this: 1) Vince doesn’t feel Christian is a big enough star to keep the title, and wanted to get it on Orton ASAP, or 2) This is the start of Christian’s heel turn.

I don’t want to speculate too much right now because I’m not sure. Christian sold confusion, shock, and depression leaving the arena, so at the end of the night it was still about him. While I’m not happy that Christian lost, I’m willing to give this angle a chance.
Former WWE Superstar Shane Helms (AKA The Hurricane) and his girlfriend, Karen, were recently in a major motorcycle accident and have fairly serious injuries. If you want to wish them well, you can tweet @ShaneHelmsCom or you can send the tweets to @MATTHARDYBRAND because I don’t know when Shane will be back around a computer.

[Editors Note: Due to the amount of article submissions I have received, the next “WHAT?” won’t go up until Monday at the earliest. I will try to have most of the stuff I have received posted up in the next day or two so if we talked about me posting your work don’t worry, it will go up soon enough. I am loving the stuff I have received and encourage more people to send stuff in. With that being said I want to send out my prayers and well wishes to Shane “Hurricane” Helms and his girlfriend Kate. It has been reported that Helms suffered a broken leg, a broken ankle, his jaw was dislocated and he also broke his nose. Helms also received 200 stitches and is currently in the hospital. His girlfriend Karen suffered a broken neck. Damn. Sounds like this could have been a fatal accident and I’m really glad nobody died as a result. I really fucking hope that they have a speedy recovery.]

Well, that’s it for this Infamous Smackdown Review. I hope you enjoyed this and thanks for reading.

Good review. Honestly, I’m both a Orton and Christian fan (I’m a fan of a lot of wrestlers xD), but I was one of the many who believed that Christian would never have this title around his waist and as far as I’m concern, he didn’t…2 days can’t really be considered a reign.

I think WWE did this, to please Edge and that Vince/Creative whoever decided this doesn’t think that Christian can be one of the top wrestlers in the company, or maybe they are still punishing him for going to TNA in the past.

Either way, it was sad that his reign was so short. Orton doesn’t need another title. In fact they should put a heel Orton on SD! and establish someone as the new top face.

However, unlike many fans, I don’t blame this on Orton, at all. And even if he had said to management that he wanted a title just because Cena also has one (joking), it still wouldn’t be his fault. Management should think by themselves and ignore backstage powers.

Note: Im not saying Orton asked for the title, I’m just saying that management shouldn’t be affected by pressures.

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I’m convinced Orton DID ask for the title for the inconvenience of having to now work on a Tuesday, lol. If I had any political stroke in WWE I would make sure I always has the championship too.

It was a tough match to watch. Just a bad taste in my mouth. The look on their faces even seemed to be off. Orton wasnt in character. Christian just stared at him. I’m sure they were like we are putting Orton on Smackdown and we want him to be champion, but we will give you your title on Sunday. Its a scripted show but it DOES mean something to some of these guys. A guy like Orton who was given titles early in his career doesnt know what its like to be so hungry for the prize, since a child. It sucks but we’ll move on from it

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:39 pm

It helped that the match was built up as an epic. I expected Orton to squash Christian, but Orton made Christian look good even in defeat. Sucks though cuz Christian deserved a longer run, but shit happens.

  3. May 7, 2011 at 12:56 pm

Be back later with more thoughts until then here’s a copy and paste of my Smacked Up TJR comment on this situation:

I expected to hate Smackdown going into this show fully aware of what was about to happen, but I was pleased with the main event. The announcers hyped it up as a big deal and how in WWE you can be challenged at anytime by bigger stars thatn you are and could lose the title in a heartbeat if you don’t bring your A game. If Orton won in a squash match then I would be highly upset, but it was execute well. I would have prefered a PPV match, but I cant complain about a high quality match with an important title change on free TV. I am really looking forward to a rematch between Orton and Christian and hope they keep Christian a face. The end of Smackdown with Christian being all sad was important to get the fans behind him. Orton will still get cheered, but so will Christian. This may make hims seem to belong on the same top tier Orton is on so this loss might have helped Christian out more in the long run that it could ever do to hurt his character.

Really good stuff Shaman. I like your recap style. And the Smackdown gif circa UPN.

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I had that GIF in the stash and used it for my own Smackdown writeups, but I passed it on to a worthy pupil. It seems that Shaman has been studying my ways, lol.

  5. May 7, 2011 at 1:06 pm

I’ve wanted Orton to hold to WHC for so long (not the WWE title). This was hard to watch and harder go write about. Orton’s character is so strong right now, and he should have beaten a major heel like Sheamus for the title EVENTUALLY. Christain deserved a long run. I wonder how people are gonna react to Orton next week. I don’t even know how I’ll react to him. Christian losing really does suck.

And give credit to JCITY for all the awesome pictures from the actual show. How do you find those?

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Some came from wwe.com others from fan sites others from tumblrs etc, etc I be surfing like a motherfucker to find shit that works, lol.

I actually was very happy with this show, pretty good solid wrestling matches, including the main event, which I loved, despite Ortons victory. I think the talent they moved to Smackdown is looking beneficial for the show and should make Friday nights very fun to watch.

    • May 7, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I agree. Christian vs Randy Orton is a very fresh main event feud which I’m excited to see.

      • Ace O. Hart
        May 7, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Definitely something we havent seen before. I hope WWE doesn’t just blow this under the rug, it could be a special rivalry if handled correctly.

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:42 pm

It was a great main event I just hated knowing the ending.

  7. May 7, 2011 at 1:18 pm

I’m hearing that the Christian-Orton match was really good…I gotta check it out on my DVR soon.

    • May 7, 2011 at 1:24 pm

It was good. I probably would have enjoyed it better if I didn’t already know what was going to happen, becuase I would have never expected this result. I would think it would be a no contest or something. It was hard to watch knowing what was going to happen to Christian.

    • Ace O. Hart
      May 7, 2011 at 1:25 pm

You really should, I’ve already watched it twice, that’s how much I loved it. They seem to have some really good chemistry and of course the crowd was popping for both of them the entire time. Great, great match. I’m a little shocked they gave it away for free.

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:43 pm

All this review needed to say was “DAMN IT!!!”. But, I’m glad you didn’t take the easy way out.

    • May 7, 2011 at 6:46 pm

A review full of Ron Simmons vids lol. I think I did something like that in an old ass “WHAT?”

  9. May 8, 2011 at 3:45 am

This totally worked for me. Covered all the major points without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail and did it in entertaining style.

    • May 8, 2011 at 1:31 pm

      That’s what she said.

      • May 8, 2011 at 4:03 pm

If someone is gay do they say “Thats what he said”? Hmmm……

Look at the “Editors Note” you made for my Layla vs Alicia match winner and ask yourself that question one more time.
