How I Would Book It – Mark Henry’s World Heavyweight Championship Feud by Tony Kegger

Something has been bothering me lately. Why does Mark Henry have very few accomplishments in the WWE? It seems like everyone in the Internet Wrestling Community is complaining about Christian losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Randy Orton on a recent episode of Friday Night Smackdown. At least Christian won the title. Mark Henry has never been World Champion in the WWE. Mark Henry has been with the WWE since 1996. Christian has spent less years with the company and made his WWE debut in 1998. Mark Henry has been with the WWE his entire wrestling career while Christian spent three years from November 2005 to November 2008 with TNA Wrestling. Despite all of that, Christian’s title victory at Extreme Rules was praised as being well deserved, but no one seems to be demanding that Mark Henry gets a title reign. I’m not much of a Mark Henry fan but he has spent so much time with the WWE and it seems that he is not being appreciated enough. How can the WWE call Mark Henry “The World’s Strongest Man” and never make him the World Heavyweight Champion? Mark Henry deserves a push so it is time for me to discuss how I would book Mark Henry’s opportunity at becoming the next World Heavyweight Champion.

Poor Mark Henry. He has spent so many years in the WWE and you would think he would have a long list of accomplishments. But sadly, superstars with far less experience than Mark Henry have accomplished a lot more. Think about it…what is Mark Henry best known for? He had a Wrestlemania match with the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 22. That’s a cool achievement and not that many superstars can say they were one of Taker’s Wrestlemania victims. Too bad it was a mediocre match. I think the WWE made it a casket match just to make it more interesting. So while it was a great honor for Mark Henry, it is not on of those matches people talk about when discussing the Undertaker’s greatest Wrestlemania matches. Mark Henry is also known for being a member of the Nation of Domination. Unfortunately, the Nation of Domination is pretty much a forgotten WWE stable right now. Just look at The Rock’s birthday party episode on RAW. At one point during that RAW, former Nation member Farooq (now known as Ron Simmons) shows up at The Rock’s party. The Rock is a former Nation member and former leader of The Nation after Farooq was kicked out of the Nation. When we see Farooq, he only says, “Damn!” and there is no other interaction between him and The Rock. It seems the WWE does not want us to remember the Nation of Domination. Mark Henry’s affiliation with The Nation did little for his career just like X-Pac’s involvement with DX, and never got him a World Championship feud.

What else can I say about Mark Henry’s accomplishments? After all that time in the WWE, he must have won a lot of gold during his career. After doing some research, I found out Mark Henry is probably one of the least decorated veteran superstars in WWE history. Mark Henry has had just two title reigns: one as the European Champion and one as the ECW Champion. Being a former ECW Champion does not mean much at all. It is a championship that doesn’t exist anymore and even when it did exist, it had less value than the Intercontinental Championship and probably the United States Championship as well. At least Mark Henry was European Champion. It’s another championship that doesn’t exist anymore, but it has been held by a bunch of important WWE Superstars like Shawn Michaels, the British Bulldog, Owen Hart, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Rob Van Dam, and Kurt Angle. However, I did some research on his European Championship reign and what I found was comical. Mark Henry never won the title in a match. Look at WWE.com’s official explanation for Mark Henry’s European Championship reign:

“Much like Triple H and Mideon before him, Mark Henry had a pretty easy road to the European Championship. He didn’t even have to face anybody to become champion. Instead, Henry helped Jeff Jarrett defeat D’Lo Brown for both the Intercontinental and European Championships at SummerSlam 1999. The next night on RAW, Jarrett rewarded Henry with the European Championship.”

Ouch….it’s always better to win a championship after a match instead of it being awarded to you. When Christian won the World Heavyweight Championship, he won it in a match. It’s not like Edge just gave him the championship because he is his best friend; Edge made Christian earn the championship. What’s worse for Mark Henry’s championship reign is that it lasted only 34 days and he dropped the championship to mid-card legend D’Lo Brown. At least Christian dropped his title to Randy Orton who is an established star. Mark Henry’s title reign was so short that Shane McMahon and Al Show have held the European Championship longer than Mark Henry. So let’s recap: Mark Henry is best known for a mediocre Wrestlemania match with the Undertaker, being a member of a stable that the WWE doesn’t want people to remember, and for holding two championships that no longer exist. And I haven’t even mentioned what Mark Henry is really best known for. Mark Henry was with the WWE during the Attitude Era and the Attitude Era had a lot of controversial moments. Mark Henry was involved in one of them. Mark Henry got into a relationship with Mae Young. Eventually Mae Young got pregnant and was carrying Mark Henry’s child. When it was time for Mae Young to deliver the baby, Mae Young gave birth to a hand. So that is what Mark Henry may be best known for when he is gone from the WWE. I can only imagine the conversation between WWE fans when Mark Henry dies:

WWE fan #1: Hey did you hear that Mark Henry died?
WWE fan #2: Who?
WWE fan #1: You know…Sexual ChocolateThe World’s Strongest Man.
WWE fan #2: I don’t remember who he was.
WWE fan #1: He was the guy who knocked up Mae Young and became the father of a hand.
WWE fan #2: Oh…now I remember!

Mark Henry’s achievements in the WWE are extremely embarrassing. He’d be a first ballot inductee in the WWE Hall of Shame. Everyone was upset at how Christian was treated, but let’s take a look at what Christian has accomplished in the WWE besides winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Christian is a nine-time Tag Team Champion and won seven of his tag team titles with Edge, he is also a three-time Intercontinental Champion, and he has won the ECW Championship, European Championship, Hardcore Championship, and Light Heavyweight Championship. Christian is the 23rd Triple Crown Champion in WWE history and after winning the World Heavyweight Champion, he is only the 11th Grand Slam Champion. Christian is one of the most decorated Superstars in WWE history. His career compared to Mark Henry’s career makes all of the recent complaints about Christian’s title reign seem silly.

Now it’s time to book the events leading up to Mark Henry’s title match. I am NOT booking how Mark Henry would win the World Heavyweight Championship. A Mark Henry title reign is not going to increase ratings and it would be an even worse decision now that he is a heel after getting drafted to Smackdown. Mark Henry does deserve a nice push and having him compete for the World Heavyweight Championship should be a big deal for him, especially since I don’t think he’s even been in a match for the World Heavyweight Championship. It’s better than jobbing to up-and-coming Superstars like Cody Rhodes. And I’m not talking about masked Cody Rhodes. I’m talking about Randy Orton’s personal assistant Cody Rhodes. So what’s the best way for Mark Henry to get a title shot? He can finally win a Royal Rumble match, but that would mean he would have a main event match at Wrestlemania and no one wants to see that. The best option is for Mark Henry to start a feud with Randy Orton for a title match at Capitol Punishment, the new WWE pay-per-view in June. A Mark Henry vs. Randy Orton match is not going to sound like an interesting PPV match so the storyline going into the match needs to be good.

Mark Henry’s road to Capitol Punishment begins on the Smackdown after the Over the Limit PPV. Randy Orton is in the ring and he is still the World Heavyweight Champion. Orton says he came to Smackdown at the right time. The biggest threats to take his title are now drafted to RAW (Rey Mysterio, Big Show, Alberto Del Rio), retired (Edge), or injured (Undertaker). Orton says he expects to be the World Heavyweight Champion for a long time. Mark Henry comes out to the ring and says he should be the next superstar to challenge Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship. Mark Henry says he has beaten Orton before and shows Orton a video of Mark Henry beating Orton in a gauntlet match during the June 29, 2009 episode of RAW. Mark Henry points out that even though he was the third opponent for Orton that night, Orton’s first opponent was easy (Evan Bourne) and his second opponent (Jack Swagger) purposely got himself counted out. Orton replies that that match was almost two years ago and Orton has proven he is better than Mark Henry since then. If Mark Henry wants a title match, he will have to earn it. Mark Henry says that he thinks Orton is scared to face him because Orton knows Mark Henry is capable of beating him. Orton replies that he wants an opponent who would be a challenge for him and does not want to defend his championship against unworthy opponents. Orton again says that Mark Henry needs to earn his opportunity for a title match and leaves the ring.

Later that night, Randy Orton faces Sheamus in a non-title match. Mark Henry interferes in the match and starts attacking Randy Orton. Mark Henry leaves the ring to get the steel ring steps and tosses the steel steps into the ring. He hits Orton with the steel steps several times. Finally, Mark Henry places the steel steps down and he hits Randy Orton with the World’s Strongest Slam right onto the steel steps! Mark Henry then steals Orton’s World Heavyweight Championship and leaves the ring.

Next week on Smackdown, Mark Henry is in the ring with the World Heavyweight Championship. He says that since Randy Orton would not give him a title match, Mark Henry created his own championship opportunity. After the beat down he gave Orton, Mark Henry says he decided he has earned the World Heavyweight Championship. According to Mark Henry, he now owns the championship and if Orton wants it back, he will have to defeat Mark Henry in a match at Capitol Punishment. Randy Orton comes out and says he is tired of hearing Mark Henry tell everyone that he is better than Orton. Randy Orton says he will accept Mark Henry’s offer so he can shut him up for good.

There is four weeks in-between Over the Limit and Capitol Punishment. During the last two weeks before the PPV, I would have Mark Henry cutting promos about how badly he beat Orton after the Sheamus-Orton match and have him repeatedly show video clips of the beat down. With Mark Henry constantly portraying himself in a strong way and making Orton look weak, it hopefully would make fans so angry at Mark Henry that they would want to see the match just to see Orton beat the crap out of him. I would have Mark Henry lose cleanly to Orton at the pay-per-view, but it would be interesting to see a PPV match-up we have never seen before instead of a match we have seen many times like another Orton vs. Sheamus title match. Mark Henry may never be a World Champion but he deserves to be in a PPV World Championship match at least once before he retires.

I can see Mark Henry making it to the HOF. Maybe not first ballot, but he has been around for so long and, to me, that should count for something.

  2. May 14, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Not sure if mark henry will ever get in the HOF but i’m sure vince mcmahon will reward him in some way for being a good team player in the wwe.

    • May 14, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Mark Henry should join forces with Ezekiel Jackson. They are both strong and can really dominate as a Tag Team. Zeke could help Mark Henry win the World Heavyweight Championship if the opportunity presented itself too.

Yeah. Part of it has to do with being well-liked or not and Henry is.

    • May 14, 2011 at 8:50 pm

They really should have used his World Strongest Man credentials to make him a formidable threat for a world title. I read some shit though that says Mark Henry came in 10th place in a strong man competition in 92 so technically he isn’t the strongest man in the world and his whole career has been a fraud. DAMN!!!!!!!

Actually in 2002 he won the Arnold Strongman competition

  4. May 14, 2011 at 8:50 pm

i have a feeling that santino might end up in that koko b. clown wing. he’s been really over with the crowd for the last two years even when he would lose all his matches.

    • May 14, 2011 at 8:55 pm

You’re right. Mark Henry might not have had an illustrious career but its way better than Santino’s career especially after all that Santina crap. Then again Santino has held more gold than Mark Henry and actually won them unlike Handrew’s dad.

      • Capt. Smooth
        May 15, 2011 at 9:35 am

Santino’s been in the WWE for 5 years. If he continues to stay over, he will get in. Also, I know people keep trashing the Santina storyline, but he was so into the character, the fans turned him face. Santina must’ve been doing something right.

        • May 15, 2011 at 10:57 am

Santino is so over right now, I don’t know how he was ever heel. I’ve seen Santino twice in-person I think and both times he got good crowd reactions. And whenever you watch Santino on TV, the fans just love everything Santino does. It’s just great seeing the giant pop he gets when his music hits and when he sets up for the Cobra….he’s doing something right. I got to admit that Santino does cut some funny promos.

          • May 15, 2011 at 1:59 pm

At the Smackdown World Tour I was boooing the crap out if Santino but I was alone, he was super over you would have thought Cena and Hulk Hogan just had a baby. He is good at entertaining I will give him that, but some of the stuff he has done is questionable.

I enjoyed the article although I am convinced he doesn’t deserve a title shot. Also I read this from wikipedia: A week later, Henry received assistance from Daivari, who turned on Angle and announced that he was the manager of Henry.[28] With Daivari at his side, Henry would face Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight title at the 2006 Royal Rumble in January, which he lost when Angle hit him with a chair (without the referee seeing) and pinned Henry with a roll-up.[29]

Personally I feel he’s received his shot and I would feel unhappy seeing him in a feud for the biggest title in the company. So hopefully he won’t be plugged into a program for it, but despite all that, if he is I would understand and respect what he’s done for the WWE.

    • May 15, 2011 at 10:38 am

Good research Ace. I did look at Mark Henry’s Wikipedia page while doing research for this article and it’s too bad I missed that paragraph you found. I could have found a way to incorporate it into my story. (That match happened during a period when I stopped watching the WWE.) That said, it doesn’t change my point much at all and I would still argue Mark Henry deserves one last push. Christian had competed for the World Title in the past too….I have a DVD that contains a Christian vs. Chris Jericho vs. John Cena match for the WWE Championship at Vengeance 2005. That didn’t stop Christian fans from arguing that he deserved another title shot.

Would I be very disappointed if Mark Henry never got another title shot? Not really. This is a topic you don’t see discussed a lot in the IWC and I thought it would be something new. I do believe in everything I wrote….I’m not really a big Mark Henry fan but I got HUGE respect for ANY former Attitude Era Superstar. Mark Henry’s is a Superstar from my childhood so he’s got my support for life.

Ace you took the words out of my mouth. I remember Henry’s title shot. They put it on after the Rumble just so Undertaker could return. Not only did they shit on Rey’s Rumble victory by having it in the middle of the show but Angle rolled up Henry to win so they could end the show with the Undertaker, who’s appearance was more important than Rey winning the Rumble…Anyway…this was an interesting topic but one I hope never happens. Henry has been financially secure for these years and if I was him I wouldn’t be mad. He didn’t win some scripted titles, but he got paid. Gospel

    • May 15, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Lol, that match must have have really flew under the radar cuz I don’t remember that shit and i tend to remember everything.

    May 15, 2011 at 7:32 am

Henry add his opportunity. If they put a guy in a feud with Taker is because they have some faith in his career. Apparently he failed the test. Simple as that. Also remember the Angle feud…didn’t like it.

I didn’t like the World Strongest Man gimmick at all and sexual Chocolate was just awkward.

Sure he’s been there for a long time, but if we think like that, Goldust should also be World Champion…or even William Regal. And both this men would be better than Henry.

    • Capt. Smooth
      May 15, 2011 at 9:38 am

With Henry’s recent weight loss, maybe the WWE is looking at him differently.

    • May 15, 2011 at 10:45 am

I’m not saying Mark Henry should be champion. I’m just saying he hasn’t had much accomplishments and deserves a small push for all he’s done in the WWE. One title match isn’t going to drastically hurt ratings especially if the storyline is done very well. If you tell a good story, you can put anyone in a title match. The WWE once was able to convince us that Stone Cold vs. a 50+ year old owner was a match worth seeing. They convinced us to see a match between a 60+ year old man and a man who wasn’t allowed to take bumps (Bret Hart) last year.

As for Goldust….hell yeah I’d love to see him get another push. That’s another topic but Goldust is more underrated than Mark Henry. Goldust is the son of the American Dream and he’s a pretty good in-ring performer. Heel Goldust was a very popular gimmick awhile ago.

    • May 15, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Goldust was gone for a while and left for WCW and TNA in the past so Mark Henry is a more loyal superstar and as bad as his career has been mishandled he hasn’t kissed his bosses ass on live tv so I guess he is doing better than Regal too. Shit Mark Henry stays on Raw or Smackdown and as much as he isn’t doing anything noteworthy, he isnt regulated to superstars and I never see him being futured endeavored so he must be doing something right.

Royal Rumble 2006, Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry for the World Heavyweight Title. I believe that counts, although it wasn’t a great match.

  9. May 15, 2011 at 11:25 am

I just want to say right now that I got an idea for my next column. It won’t be a “How I Would Book It”. I haven’t started writing it yet but it could be a very interesting read that could start a lot of discussion and it might end up being a two-parter. If JCity likes it, hopefully you’ll see that column here sometime next week.

A lot of people here don’t seem to want to see Mark Henry get a push. That’s cool. This article isn’t about getting people to like Mark Henry…it’s about discussing a topic that the IWC overlooks. It’s something different….I think it is sometimes better to discuss obscure topics that aren’t being discussed.

    • May 15, 2011 at 2:13 pm

I like topics that arent really talked about so this was cool. Hate him or love him Mark Henry never got this much attention before. From his old geezer baby mama, to his son Hadrew spilling his little guts out on such a public forum to being booked to have a World Heavyweight Championship match on a PPV, Mark Henry is having the best week ever.

      • May 16, 2011 at 12:45 am

My next column is definitely gonna be a two-parter. There’s no way I can cover everything I want to cover in one column. Still keeping the topic a secret….all I can say is that it is NOT a “How I Would Book It” column. I still think it should be an enjoyable read.

        • May 16, 2011 at 1:54 am

Looking forward to that. If it takes up two parts it has to be good, or not, but I’m sure it will be good, lol.

    THE INFAMOUS JCITY™ :
At the Smackdown World Tour I was boooing the crap out if Santino but I was alone, he was super over you would have thought Cena and Hulk Hogan just had a baby. He is good at entertaining I will give him that, but some of the stuff he has done is questionable.

I said I’ve seen Santino two times but actually it was three times. The first time I saw him, it was at the height of the Santina Era and he had just recently turned face. The last two times were in September 2010 and March 2011 and he got Hulk Hogan-like pops both times. I don’t know how he does it but he may be the most over mid-carder I’ve ever seen.

    • May 16, 2011 at 1:57 am

I really thought for just a second that he was going to win the Royal Rumble this year and I would have been pissed and never watched WWE again.

I wouldn’t mind if Mark Henry won the belt for a day. As he wins someone else can cash a money in the bank on him. I like the McDonalds championship for Mark at the end.

    • May 16, 2011 at 11:28 am

Mark Henry should WIN Money in the Bank in Chicago at the MitB PPV because I’m going!! Just brought my ticket this morning! I’ve always wanted to see a ladder match.

      • May 18, 2011 at 4:57 pm

If he wins Money In The Bank i’m sure people will riot, lol. Now if he did a shooting star press off the ladder then that would be awesome.

  12. May 16, 2011 at 12:27 pm

Henry’s made a pretty respectable career out of (let’s be honest) relatively little talent. He’s earned himself enough to retire comfortably and fair play to him. With two belts I’m sure they could give him a vanity run with a title but I’m not sure it’s entirely necessary.

    • May 16, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Mark Henry should form a tag team with Zack Ryder and go after the Tag Titles.

  13. May 16, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Dunno Zack might get jealous cause Henry’s more tanned than him …..

the guy has no talent, he shud have a ic title fued maybe at best. putting him in a world title fued is insulting to all the gifted wrestlers on the roster

You obviously know nothing about wrestling. A real worker doesn’t have to do the flashy Sin Cara shit. The real workers are the guys that make THEM look good; like Henry, or Chavo. Get ur facts straight.

      • July 15, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I agree. The company is built on the back of the workhorses. Everyone plays a part. Without the Henry’s there would be no Cena’s. I’m just glad he’s finally getting a good quality push now.

You’ve gotten your wish man, Mark Henry’s now a CHAMPION!!!!

    • December 14, 2011 at 8:50 am

I never wanted him as champion…I just wanted him to get a championship match. However, I was very happy for him when he won.
