RAW Comments (June 13, 2011) by Tony Kegger

[Editors Note: RAW was 3 hours on Monday and I didn’t really feel like writing a 7,000+ word review this week. I’m working on a few different things that will be posted over the course of the next two weeks though so no I’m not slacking, I just didn’t feel like reviewing RAW this week. Tony Kegger had written some RAW comments last week on his blog and I thought that it was pretty good. Short and to the point, something I have to figure out how to do because when I start writing I just can’t stop for some weird reason. Anyways, I will probably miss a RAW Review every once in a while, but these RAW comments make a great suitable replacement. When I do end up reviewing RAW don’t hesitate to check out Tony’s site for his RAW comments. I know they might not have been a weekly feature, but with enough encouragement maybe he will make it a weekly thing. Maybe we can fuse our RAW thoughts one day, who knows, but until then enjoy Tony Kegger’s RAW Comments.]

WWE Monday Night RAW was live from the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York this week. Here are my RAW Comments.

I think the star of the night this week on RAW might have been The Miz. He got to interact with both “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Rowdy Roddy Piper on the same night! The Miz didn’t even talk much during his segment with Austin, but The Miz’s facial expressions while Austin talked were awesome. His segment with Piper was also great and Piper is still amazing on the mic. I’m impressed with The Miz. He’s no longer the WWE Champion, no longer a #1 contender for the WWE Championship, and yet The Miz continues to remain relevant in the WWE. It’s good to see that The Miz is still the kind of Superstar that doesn’t need a WWE Championship title to play a big role in the WWE.

Three matches for Capitol Punishment were announced on RAW. The three new matches are CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio, Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston and Alberto Del Rio vs. the Big Show. I’m surprised to see Big Show come back so soon. The Del Rio vs Big Show match won’t be a show-stealer, but could be somewhat interesting if Del Rio can carry the Big Show (figuratively not literally). This is a good test for Del Rio. If he can make Big Show look good then Del Rio should have no problem making John Cena look good if those two face each other at Summerslam. As for Punk vs. Rey, those two have faced each other multiple times on Pay Per View and they could possibly steal the show this Sunday. Finally, we got Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler for what seems like the 50th time. They probably won’t have the best match of the night at Capitol Punishment, but they always seem to have a solid match when they face each other. By the way, I wouldn’t be shocked if Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne is a last minute addition to the PPV.

I enjoyed seeing CM Punk going face-to-face with Stone Cold. I read that some people in the Internet Wrestling Community think the WWE was teasing a possible match between the two. I don’t see that happening, but I will say those two seemed to have great chemistry together. Maybe there might be a way for them to have a feud that doesn’t result in a PPV match because I don’t think Stone Cold will ever wrestle another match in the WWE. John Cena and CM Punk had an interesting feud in late 2010/early 2011 that never resulted in a one-on-one PPV match. By the way, CM Punk made an interesting comment to Stone Cold. Punk said, “You gave me a match with John Cena and I want to thank you because…you just set in the motion something that is gonna change the landscape of the WWE forever.” Maybe we will get to see next week on RAW what Punk was referring to.

No Zack Ryder on RAW despite the fact that Ryder is billed from Long Island, New York. I was a little bit surprised at first, but now I understand why Ryder wasn’t used. First of all, he’s really an irrelevant RAW Superstar. Maybe the IWC thinks he’s a big deal, but I’m sure a huge majority of the RAW audience didn’t care that Ryder wasn’t on the show. Also, I don’t think the WWE wanted to see Ryder get a huge pop on live TV. The WWE obviously has no big plans for him and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was released before the end of the year. Ryder did get a pre-RAW match so it’s not like the fans in Long Island didn’t get to see him. Ryder has fans, but not enough fans. Ryder’s appearances or lack of appearances are probably not affecting the RAW TV ratings much.

After seeing R-Truth attack John Morrison backstage on RAW this week, it looks like the WWE will resume the R-Truth and Morrison feud when Morrison returns from his injury. My question is when will we see that match? Obviously there will be a match and most likely it will be a PPV match. I doubt they brought back Morrison for a backstage segment (probably pre-taped before RAW) just so he and R-Truth could have a RAW match when he returns. This probably will be a PPV feud, but which PPV? The next two PPVs are Money in the Bank and Summerslam. I think Morrison might be ready in time for Money in the Bank, but I’d be surprised if the WWE wasted an opportunity for Morrison to be in the RAW ladder match. If R-Truth and Morrison do face each other at Money in the Bank, that would mean there would be a new #1 contender for the WWE Championship which should be interesting. I think we will see R-Truth vs. John Morrison at Summerslam. I know Summerslam is supposed to be the second biggest PPV of the year but I honestly think that R-Truth vs. Morrison is a match worthy for Summerslam which is something I didn’t think I would be saying a few months ago. R-Truth has been a great heel lately and his feud with Morrison has been going on for at least two months now so I think that would actually be an interesting Summerslam match.

CM Punk and John Cena had a solid match on RAW. It wasn’t a classic match, but considering it was a RAW match and John Cena was one of the participants, that match was as good as I could have hoped. The crowd was the best part of the match. Dueling chants during a Cena match is nothing new, but the Long Island crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Cena”/”CM Punk” for almost the whole match. I still think they were chanting “Cena Sucks” and not “CM Punk”, but everyone has been saying that they were chanting “CM Punk” so I believe them. I can’t wait to see how Punk is used after Capitol Punishment. Will we see a CM Punk vs. John Cena match at Money in the Bank in Chicago? If we do, Chicago is Punk’s hometown so the crowd reaction for that match would probably be even bigger than it was in Long Island. I have a feeling that we will NOT see that match especially if the rumors of Punk taking a break from the company are true. I don’t think Vince McMahon would like seeing CM Punk getting more cheers than John Cena. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Raw next week is three hours also. Overkill.

    • June 15, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Dammit. While I do love watching 3 hour RAW’s, writing for that long sucks. I used to do more condensed reviews with only opinion and no play by play, but it had came naturally at the time. Now long drawn out reviews come naturally. I don’t know whats wrong with me, lol. I do like the Power of the People theme and I cant wait to vote for matches even though the votes will be fixed.

      • June 15, 2011 at 9:00 pm

Believe it or not, the voting is not fixed. Last year the fans voted for Zack Ryder as The Miz’s tag team partner. The fans also voted for CM Punk as Cena’s opponent instead of world heavyweight champion Jack Swagger or fan favorite Rey Mysterio. So the fan’s vote does count. That said, the WWE will set up the choices in a way that the fans will end up choosing for what the WWE hoped they would choose. For example, they will say, “Who do you want to see face The Miz? Evan Bourne, Trent Baretta, or WWE Hall of Famer Hacksaw Jim Duggan?!”

By the way, John Cena better watch out. The last time the WWE did a “Power to the People” theme was the same night that the Nexus Invasion began.

        • June 15, 2011 at 10:09 pm

I still think its fixed. Once in a while they will throw a unpredictable match up for shits and giggles, but they work off one script. I doubt they write out 3 different scenarios per match. No way to know for sure, but I hope something like the Nexus debut happens again. Punk said something about his plans now going into motion or something so maybe there will be a surprise, knowing WWE though nothing is going to happen, lol.

The flaw with the Ryder argument is that even if his fanbase isn’t “that big” he still clearly has more fans than more than half of the roster, and that’s WITHOUT the WWE doing anything with him.

The WWE is against anyone they don’t want to push getting a good reaction from the crowd? That sums up everything that’s wrong with the WWE.

    • June 15, 2011 at 5:07 pm

All his fans are Internet fans and in the eyes of a wrestling promoter we are the 10% percent that doesn’t matter to them. Without the internet there would be no Ryder fans, except those that love Jersey Shore rip offs and those who like watching WWE Superstars. WWE be on some if we didn’t make you into a star then fuck you type shit. If only they realized that the IWC does affect business in general. The more unappreciated the fans feel the more they will rip on the product and steal PPV’s. Other people read the negativity and develop there own negative feelings towards the product. If WWE paid attention (which they do they just chose to ignore it) to the IWC then they would always have compelling creative television shows and regenerated fans that will help spread the word in a positive way.

    Chris :
The flaw with the Ryder argument is that even if his fanbase isn’t “that big” he still clearly has more fans than more than half of the roster, and that’s WITHOUT the WWE doing anything with him.

Should the WWE be impressed that Ryder has more fans than guys like Curt Hawkins, Funaki, Mark Henry, and Ted DiBiase? I will say I think he could be interesting if he was used in backstage segments more often.

    • June 15, 2011 at 10:35 pm

They should team him back up with Curt Hawkins. Its not like he is too busy being a top Superstar or anything.

      • June 16, 2011 at 8:21 am

        J,

I found this on Lords of Pain:

“The fact that Zack Ryder would have some vocal fans at Monday’s RAW in Long Island, New York was no secret going into the show. This was talked about internally and the decision was made to have him perform on Superstars only. People within WWE were upset that Ryder wasn’t used with the feeling that he’s got himself over with fans using social media and without a normal WWE push, and he wasn’t even put on RAW because the company knew he would get a bigger reaction than some of the stars they push on TV.”

        • June 16, 2011 at 10:57 am

          That’s some twisted logic there.

Maybe McIntyre can make some videos to get off Superstars too….

          Drew McIntyre: Under The Kilt

We can watch him work on his divorse settlement while telling us why he’s the Chosen One.

          • June 16, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I might actually watch Superstars this week so I can see if Ryder’s pop would have made any difference. It wouldn’t hurt to give him a little feud on RAW, shit DiBiase was on TV all the time and he sucked after taking on his dads gimmick.

Under The Kilt is a little too much. Sounds like a softcore upskirt porn site.

I’d say have him backstage or something. At least do that!

              • June 16, 2011 at 7:04 pm

He was on Superstars. I think that’s enough time. What about JTG? What about Yoshi Tatsu? What about Primo? Do they also get backstage segments on RAW?

                  June 16, 2011 at 8:51 pm

No, but it was his hometown. Give him that nibble. Let him interact with Stone Cold. He could have done the “Take care, spike your hair!” line at Austin. It would’ve been a great bit. Also, VERY few people watch Superstars. Even if it’s just a 5 second cameo, let him be on the “A-show” at home.

  4. June 15, 2011 at 9:07 pm

    J,

Where did you find that CM Punk and Austin photo….holy crap!

Have you ever seen the photo of a younger Chris Jericho with Ricky Steamboat?

    • June 15, 2011 at 9:44 pm

I found that one a while ago too. Usually there’s links at the end of Rajah news reports to PWPIX with unique photos. Either that or JCITY just googled CM Punk and Austin and looked through 20 pages.

      • June 15, 2011 at 10:03 pm

I didn’t even recognize CM Punk. I just saw the link for the picture say “CM Punk meets Stone Cold Steve Austin when he was younger”.

    • June 15, 2011 at 10:11 pm

I had that pic up on my old site around the time Punk went to RAW and had the perfect excuse to use it again, lol. I think I originally got it from NODQ if I’m not mistaken.

        June 16, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Punk looks really happy in that pic. And Steamboats looks high in his.

        • Chadam
          June 17, 2011 at 12:48 pm

The reason he looks high is because Jericho had just asked a question and as he was answering, Jerichos friend snapped the pic.

    • June 16, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Didn’t drive a car, but we did damage, lots of damage. I was literally in a wife beater and basketball shorts until they won then I had to change and go join in on the nice peaceful riot, unlike the Canadians that went on a sore loser burn the city down type riot, lol.

Had to take a break from writing and say Tony you were 100% right the first time. They were chanting Lets go Cena/Cena sucks. I really thought they were chanting CM Punk, it sounds so similar and it made the match feel more epic, but the damn crowd was doing the dueling Cena chants, lol.

Here’s the thing about Cena fans using “Let’s go Cena!” as their chant. If they would only chant “CENA CENA CENA CENA” instead, it wouldn’t give the Cena haters a chance to do the “Cena sucks!” line.

      • June 16, 2011 at 10:22 pm

lol Smooth…that is so true. Maybe they secretly want the haters to voice their opinions?? Dueling chants are fun for the whole crowd. You are either a Cena fan or a Cena hater and that’s why Cena is the most important Superstar in the WWE. As Michael Cole would say….love him or hate him, no one evokes more emotion out of the WWE Universe than John Cena.

I miss all of the Attitude Era chants. They still exist today but they have been changed to be more PG friendly:

“Asshole…asshole…asshole” changed to “You Suck…You Suck”

“Holy Shit…Holy Shit” changed to “That was Awesome….that was awesome”

            “Shane’s a pussy” is gone.

Somehow “Suck It” survived the PG era. I guess the kiddies have no idea what “it” is.
