Dear IWC, CM Punk Sucks And Is Bad For Ratings.

He’s 2011’s hottest commodity. The IWC loves him. Hardcore fans have regained faith in the product because of him. He sells a ton of merchandise and he’s the voice of a new generation, but it seems that casual fans just don’t give a fuck about CM Punk as the WWE Champion. Punk’s segments on Monday Night RAW have been losing viewers left and right. It’s a real shocker when one of the most popular Superstars on the current roster draws the worst ratings of the century. Ratings haven’t been this bad since 1997 when WWE was in the mist of rebranding itself. WWE officials have been contemplating on taking the WWE Championship off Punk due to his inability to draw in the casual viewer, which says alot about the current product. We might end up being stuck with yet another John Cena WWE Championship run if WWE officials think that might help boost the ratings. More after the jump.

F4WOnline.com reports that WWE officials are considering taking the WWE Championship off CM Punk due to ‘terrible ratings patterns’ for his weekly segments on Raw.

The matter was broached prior to Sunday’sWWE TLC pay-per-view event, which saw Punk ultimately retain the strap in a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match against Alberto Del Rio and The Miz. The trend of lackluster ratings for his segments continued the following night on Raw as the program’s overrun, which saw the Straight Edge Superstar, Daniel Bryan and Zack Ryder overcame The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler, only gain 59,000 viewers.

Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer analyzes: “That’s almost impossible given people tune in to see the following show, which basically meant wrestling fans must have been tuning out in droves (they were during the first half of the match but then started gaining at 11 p.m., but hardly gained anything).”

The main event garnered a 2.67 cable rating (2.55 for the first half of the bout), which Meltzer says is by far, the lowest-rated main event on Raw in 2011 and possibly the lowest since 1997 for a non-holiday show in its regular time slot.

This just proves that hardcore fans and those in the IWC are a very small minority of fans, whose opinions don’t really matter at the end of the day. WWE gave us Punk, Bryan and Ryder as Champions and we didn’t support it. This is the exact reason WWE builds and pushes big muscular type wrestlers. Those are the larger than life characters that bring in the casual viewers. Everyday guys like CM Punk just aren’t enough and that makes me worry about the future of the pro wrestling industry as a whole. I bet the WWE is kicking itself in the ass for buying into its self-created CM Punk hype and making him the focal point of Monday Night RAW. If rating continue to plummet, “The Best In The World” might just find himself in the unemployment line. Other than wrestling, he has no other type of work experience, other than making a few pizzas. Can you imagine the worst rated wrestler in the world ringing your door bell and delivering you a motherfucking pizza? Well, it might just happen if CM Punk keeps giving the viewing public the proverbial GTS.

  1. December 24, 2011 at 1:11 pm

I’m pretty shocked reading this. It looks like CM Punk is the Most Must-Not See WWE Champion in history. He needs to stop it with the “where are my icecream bars” stuff and start being bad-ass again.

Punk, Bryan, and Ryder are still the champions I want to watch though.

    • December 24, 2011 at 3:08 pm

He was such a hated heel that maybe some fans have a hard time buying him as a face now. He also uses way too many insider terms in his promos. The IWC loves it because we know what he’s talking about, but that might confuse the casual viewer. It’s just weird because if you go by the net and the reaction he gets from the live crowd CM Punk is the fucking man. Maybe someone is sabotaging the rating numbers on purpose. Damn that John Gingivitis. Damn him to HELL!!!!!!!

This is hard to believe since CM Punk is the most popular guy in wrestling right now and this was the Raw after a ppv. Hopefully its a fluke and doesn’t happen again next week.

    • December 24, 2011 at 3:12 pm

The WWE is finally listening to the IWC and now that we are giving what we wanted, we won’t even support the product. WWE should just keep fucking ignoring the IWC and do things just to purposely piss us off like they have been doing for years. I say put the title on Cena for 20 years and call it a day. Then the ratings might finally pick up.

  3. December 24, 2011 at 3:09 pm

I thought about buying that GTS Pizza. I had an internship interview during the summer that was about 2 miles from Ian’s Pizza.

    • December 24, 2011 at 3:18 pm

The pizza toppings for the GTS are random as hell. Smoked turkey leg, sliced potatoes, swiss cheese and French fried onions on a creme fraiche base. Whoever made that pizza is definitely a stoner.

  4. December 24, 2011 at 3:10 pm

By the way, those ratings should sky-rocket this Monday. If they don’t, blame WWE for not promoting the shit out of CM Punk’s return to Chicago.

    • December 24, 2011 at 3:20 pm

The crowd should make it feel like a higher quality show, so hopefully that will make it seem more epic to the casual viewer. This is also the last Raw before the return of the familiar mysterious force. Can’t wait.

I don’t agree that Punk “sucks”.

I blame the “playlist” mentality that fans have now. They’re too fickle and change the channel so quickly that wrestlers are never given the chance to actually tell the story.

I agree we live in an era of instant gratification.

        December 24, 2011 at 4:14 pm

It’s not so much because it’s “instant”, I see it like a playlist from an IPod. With that, we get EXACTLY what we want. Using that same line of thinking in wrestling, if the story isn’t exactly what we are hoping for, we have no use for it and change the channel. If there is a wrestler we don’t like(Otunga), we change the channel, never giving him the opportunity to prove himself over time.

        • December 24, 2011 at 4:38 pm

Playlist is a good way to put it. I personally refer to it as Fast Food Culture.

    • December 24, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I personally don’t think CM Punk sucks. He’s one of the best parts of the show, even when he was a heel, but the casual fans obviously don’t see what the IWC sees in Punk. To them he sucks and guys like Cena are the ones that should be champions.

      • Capt. Smooth
        December 24, 2011 at 7:21 pm

I don’t think casual fans are as picky as smarks.

        • December 25, 2011 at 11:04 am

They are worse. Snarks bitch about everything, but at the end of the day they are loyal to the brand. Causal viewers see something they don’t like and they stop watching.

          • Capt. Smooth
            December 25, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I don’t know. Whenever I read a colum from a smark and somebody they don’t like comes on, they almost always do a sarcastic “click” or “yawn”. I tell you, there’s no way Austin, Rock, Taker, etc. ever would’ve got over if that type of mentality were around back then.

            • December 25, 2011 at 11:55 pm

But they watch over and over again and Austin was the ultimate bad ass so he would have been loved by the IWC. Rocky Maivia would have been hated just like he was back in the days and the IWC would have loved his heel turn just like everyone did back in the day. Taker was always awesome. Just face it, the current generation is bullshit compared to those in the Attitude Era.

              • Capt. Smooth
                December 26, 2011 at 9:59 am

No, they would’ve been “shoved down our throats” and would’ve become “stale”. Plus, that’s not even counting the contrarian vibe you find with smarks. Face it…change in fans>change in booking and talent.

                • December 26, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Wrestling was much better back then no matter how you look at it.

I couldn’t give a fuck what Metzler or that other nob reports, dirt sheets ruin wrestling, especially for IWC fans.

Ratings means fuck all these days. There is no proof they are actually true either. As I have said before, with YT, DVR’s and other various ways to watch RAW not live, there is still a massive amount of fans watching it. Look at UK fans, 90% of them I’d say watch it the next day, same with German, Italian, Spanish fans too.

With PPV buys and all, there is stream sites which cost you $0, hell, I often stream….don’t tell me none of you don’t either.

    • December 24, 2011 at 5:37 pm

This is from my 4th of July post:

I want to give a big FUCK YOU to whoever put that rumor out there. YOU ARE A CERTIFIED BITCH. Stop trying to get the “inside scoop” on everything and let people enjoy the show as it happens. All you dumb fucks are the reason wrestling has declined in popularity and most of these IWC writers are running around thinking they are some type of insiders when they are just guys who read the “inside scoops” written by BITCH MADE MOTHERFUCKERS LIKE YOU and if you don’t know who I’m talking about, I’m talking about the Daniel Penas and the Michael Bluths of the world and every other stupid motherfucker who copies and paste the same bullshit on all these IDENTICAL wrestling news sites. They hurt the business more than they help it. FUCK THEM and you can tell them I fucking said it and fuck the people who constantly publish spoilers. I know this post is about spoilers, but if they weren’t out there to begin with then I wouldn’t be writing this shit. Every Smackdown episode, spoilers. Every Impact Wrestling show, spoilers. SPOILERS RUIN WRESTLING YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES SO STOP SPOILING THE SPORT I LOVE JUST TO GET RECOGNITION. That’s why I prefer the sites written from a fans perspective like this one and TJR. I know rants like this might get me blackballed from the IWC sites I would one day like to write for, but I don’t give a fuck. I stand by everything I have ever said. I ain’t kissing nobody’s ass just to get on either. I’ll put my fucking self on. Fuck it. For the people who want me to bring some type of change to this IWC shit, I have a shitload of rolled up quarters loaded up in a Mossberg pump-handle shotgun and I’M KILLING EVERYBODY. NO ONE IS SAFE. How’s that for change? GET WITH IT OR GET GOT BITCHES!!!!!!

That’s how I feel about the dirtsheets most days. I personally don’t like streaming, but maybe that is due to my crappy internet connection, lol.

  8. December 24, 2011 at 5:45 pm

LMAO, that was one forceful rant! I wouldn’t want to be a dirt sheet reporter passing you on the street!

      It’s true.

And Ray, agree with you about the DVR aspect.

      • December 25, 2011 at 11:13 am

Most of those sites generate money through ads. The thing is that they all copy and paste from each other. For example, Sescoops has the same exact written content as Rajah. Only difference is a few pics and a comment section.

About DVR’s though, they count all DVR recordings watched by Thursday I think. I’m not too sure on that, but I read it somewhere.

He’s actually gotten better. He took a beating from Orton like a champ and recently, he’s a had a couple good matches with Sheamus, the second of which I’d give a good 2 1/2 to 3 stars. Not terrific, but easily the best 1 on 1, non-gimmick match he’s ever had. I wouldn’t mind a mini-feud.

            • December 26, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Just because “alot of people can care less about him” doesn’t mean that he sucks.

I think part of it is we’ve become a much more polarized and fractured society when it comes to likes and dislikes. I saw a program on C-Span about this and the shift started to happen in the 60’s and has only gotten wider. And it’s ben on a whole range of issues from music, humor, tv, cars, clothes, style, movies, etc., but the big one is politics. That divide is HUGE and will likely get bigger.
