Most Improved Wrestler Of The Year: Tie ~ Mark Henry and Cody Rhodes

2011 was the year where established veterans and the younger wrestlers alike stepped their game up. It was hard to narrow this down to only one person, so I went with the two who stood out the most. This time last year Mark Henry absolutely sucked. He was nothing more than enhancement talent used to make others look good. His ring attire didn’t do him any favors either as fans compared Henry to the Kool Aid man. All that changed in 2011. After being drafted to Smackdown, Henry switched up his whole style. He finally got the chance to start over and became the monster heel his size dictates him to be.

After years of being thought of as a joke, Henry took out all of his pent-up aggression on any WWE Superstar that got in his way. To prove that he was the biggest baddest motherfucker in the WWE, he put Big Show and Kane on the shelf. Henry also did what people have said he would never do, he won the World Heavyweight Championship. Not only did he finally win his first major title after being in the WWE for 15 years, he beat Randy Orton for it. Henry was the most dominant wrestler of 2011, but not only did he improve on his overall character, he also improved on the mic, cutting the best promos of his career. As for Cody Rhodes…

2011 has been Cody Rhodes best year ever. He started the year Dashingly, but after Rey Mysterio hit him with the 619 and broke his nose, Cody just snapped. He was no longer dashing, no, Cody considered himself to be grotesque. His character went from being self observed and light hearted to being dark and sinister. Cody did a great job with his new gimmick. He cemented himself as a must see midcarder who was destined for bigger and better things. Sure, wearing a clear mask that shows nothing is wrong with your face can be kinda dumb, but it was more than physical appearances with Cody. He was now mentally disturbed and he wanted all of us to pay for judging him. Handing out paper bags to the crowd was a nice touch for his character, who even though he thought he was now ugly, part of him was still narcissistic and thought we were all even uglier.

Not only did Cody’s character get better, but he also stepped it up in the ring. He could adapt to any style and wrestle in matches that were longer than the average 8 minutes. Cody went on to win the Intercontinental Championship in August and he has held the title ever since. He even brought back the classic Intercontinental Championship from back in the days for a great nostalgic feeling. His character definitely feels like a true throwback to the glory days of wrestling. His feud with Randy Orton proved that Cody is ready for the next level. He has since lost his mask, but he no longer needs the crutch that gimmick provided. 2011 was the year Cody Rhodes found himself. His future is extremely bright and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.

Happy for Henry. He deserves this.

Cody’s got a big future unless something bad happens.

If someone would have told me at the beginning of the year that Mark Henry would have had such a good year I would have laughed in their face. Dude had some great moments. My favorite is when he threw a sound engineer like 20 feet in the air or when he broke a steel cage and fucked Big Show up.

That’s why the point about Ryder losing to Sheamus in 5 seconds doesn’t hold water. People get pushed at different times.

If someone would have told me Zack Ryder would be United States Champion I would have laughed at them too. This has been an unpredictable year for sure.

But smarks keep telling me how “predictable” WWE is.

They are never happy about anything.

Except jizzing when Miz cashed in on Orton.

Then they weren’t happy with the way he was handled as WWE Champion.

I don’t like Cody Rhodes but Mark Henry has been good this year. Zack Ryder could have been on here too and CM Punk.

    • December 29, 2011 at 9:32 pm

What? Cody Rhodes has been awesome this year and Zack Ryder and CM Punk got their own categories so no need to include them on this one. I was trying to only give this to one wrestler but I couldn’t take away from these two. I guess you don’t like heels huh?

Fair enough and I usually root for the good guys.

        • December 30, 2011 at 5:11 pm

I appreciate faces and heels about the same I just gravitate more towards the heels.

You should do a “Most Improved Gimmick Of The Year”. I nominate R-Truth. Black rapper? Boring. Crazy guy obsessed with little kids named Jimmy? Awesome!

      Meds do help.

      • December 31, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Truth was in consideration for this post, but I felt that they dropped the ball on his after Capitol Punishment. Truth was the main casualty of the CM Punk era because once Punk rose to prominence everybody forgot all about R-Truth and his main event push.

No, I think he just forgot his meds.

    • January 1, 2012 at 8:36 pm

His meds got him suspended for a month so I don’t think he will be taking any of those any time soon.

I’m hearing there is going to be a real crackdown on fake weed by authorities this year.

        • January 2, 2012 at 12:06 am

They can’t even get rid of the real shit so that is just plain retarded.
