Blu Ray Review: Attack The Block

After watching the trailer for this movie on the Scream 4 Blu Ray, I felt intrigued by the mere thought of an alien invasion in an unban inner city setting, so I threw caution to the wind and hunted down “Attack The Block” on Blu Ray to add to my movie collection. At first I was a bit hesitant to pick it up because I’ve read that the movie featured heavy UK slang that Americans wouldn’t be able to understand and after watching the movie three times in its entirety I can say that whoever wrote that just wasn’t hip to street lingo because I understood everything perfectly. Good UK movies are rarely released here in the States, but this movie was made by the same people who brought us “Shaun Of The Dead”, which was a movie I enjoyed, being a whore for all things Zombies and all, so I thought that if this movie was to display half the humor and action of “Shaun Of The Dead” then it would have been a worthwhile purchase, and I was right. I usually buy movies, watch them, and forget them, but “Attack The Block” was different. I fucking loved this movie from beginning to end. I don’t consider many flicks to be instant cult classics, but “Attack The Block” is exactly that. For a while I’ve held a personal grudge against the UK for bombarding my television set with news and updates on the Royal Wedding last year, but all is forgiven thanks to this magnificent film.

The main characters in “Attack The Block” are a group of rebellious teenagers from the streets of South London, lead by Moses, who is pictured above in the red brimmed hat. After an early scene in the movie where Moses was shown mugging a woman, you might think that these teens are the scum of the earth, but their intentions are not malicious. This movie isn’t just about an alien invasion, but it’s also a social commentary on everyday survival on the streets. I found the characters, especially Moses, to be highly relatable as I too was running around doing similar things as a young teen in order to secure my next meal, but I digress. Anyways, as the movie progresses, the characters are faced with plenty of obstacles which lead to great action sequences, funny witty banter and a great story about over coming the odds as a tight cohesive unit. This movie was cast perfectly and by the end of it I felt like I knew everyone personally. That’s how good the characters came across on film.

I can’t keep talking about this movie without bringing up the aliens which resemble big gorilla wolf looking motherfuckers, with glowing teeth. These aliens are relentless in their hunt and for the majority of the movie it’s believed that they are invading earth in order to exact revenge on Moses and his crew for killing a much smaller alien in the beginning of the movie, but the reason they are on earth wrecking up shop is much more complex than that. For such a low-budget film, the aliens look fucking amazing. Not only do they look great, but they really come off as unrelenting killers. The big gorilla wolf looking motherfuckers end up gruesomely killing a few people along the way and when they chase the teens around town you can really sense their fear as they do everything it takes to remain alive.

My favorite character in the film has to be Moses. Not only is he the leader of his crew, but the other teens look up to him like a father figure. He is the glue that holds everything together, not only in his crew, but the movie as a whole. Moses is not afraid to do what it takes to ensure his crew’s survival, not only against the threat of aliens, but out on the cold harsh streets of South London as well. He carries himself as a grown up, which becomes more believable when you realize that he is basically forced to raise himself, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that he’s only just a kid. He’s a very complex character and without him I don’t think this movie would have been the same. Not only does he handle the responsibility of taking care of everyone on the block, but he has to deal with the guilt of provoking the alien attack to begin with. The way he takes care of the pesky alien problem at the end of the movie was epic as fuck. I really loved his character progression. He started the film as a misunderstood villain, but ended the movie as the undisputed hero. Moses is easily one of the best characters I have seen in a movie in a long time, other than Caesar from The Rise Of The Planets Of The Apes that is (C’mon, you have to admit that monkey was fucking awesome in that movie).
I don’t usually write about movies I’ve seen, but this movie is too fucking awesome not to recommend. If you like action, comedies, Sci-Fi or Urban movies then you should check this shit out ASAP. You won’t be disappointed. I included the official movie trailer below so you can see it for yourself if you need any more convincing.
I rate this movie 5 out of 5 stars. Like I said earlier, INSTANT CULT CLASSIC!

I fucking love that song.

UK stand the fuck up. One Love.

Can’t wait for the porno. Attack the Co…

Lol. I don’t know if the UK has enough sexy Pornstars to cast in such a movie. The only one I know from the UK is Alexis Silver oh and one of my favorite big tit models ever Linsey Dawn McKenzie which I used to featured all the time back when I posted Tits Or GTFO on my old site. If anyone from the UK knows any cute porn starlets then let me know, for research purposes only of course.

J, I’m sure you could do some “research”.

        • January 26, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I would need reference points to be able to conduct such research. Maybe I should go to the UK and offer a hooker some teabag and crumpets for a blowjob or something.

Lmmfao. I’ll be like; Top of the morning to ya! How I fancy me a blow from you my sweet lass. After, we can grab a fish and chips then smoke a fag. Cheerio.

I watched some of “Anamorph” starting Mick Foley last Sunday. I was disappointed to find out that Mick Foley is only in the movie for about one minute. Chris Jericho had bigger roles in “Albino Farm” and “MacGruber”.

    • January 26, 2012 at 3:13 pm

I never heard of Anamorph, but the wrestlers blowing up in the van in MacGruber was funny as fuck. So was Big Show acting like a homo.

That Monkey was fucking awesome…I agree.

    • January 26, 2012 at 3:14 pm

I didn’t really like the 1999 Planet of The Apes movie, but the new one kicked ass. Caesar deserves an Oscar.

      • January 26, 2012 at 7:49 pm

People were saying he should have been nominated. Same dude that played Gollem (sp?) in LOTR.

He’s gonna play Gollem in The Hobbit this Dec.

          • January 26, 2012 at 8:44 pm

I don’t like LOTR’s so I don’t know him and I don’t care about the actor behind the monkey, I’m talking about the actual freaking CG monkey.

No, that was HIS performance. They grafted the Chimp CGI onto what he did.

              • January 27, 2012 at 1:11 pm

I don’t care about the man behind the CGI since anyone could have done those mannerism, I’m talking about what was actually presented to me on my TV. It’s like a cartoon character or something, I like the character, not necessarily the voice actor. I want a pet chimp after that movie. I will train it to pick pocket and assassinate.

Bullshit! He had to study chimps for months to see how they move and act. There was serious talk of him getting an Oscar nomination for his work.

                  • January 28, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Anyone could have done it. Nominate the damn chimp not the Hollywood asslicker.

Bitching movie mate. I saw this one on DVD with my flatmates and we enjoyed it immensely. I reckon that I will watch it again thanks to this review mate. Glad to see the UK love here as that is where I’m from. As for porn harlots, are you not familiar with Sophie Dee? I thought she was mighty popular over in the US. Delta White is also a very popular one.

    • January 25, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Sophie Dee…. Ahhhhhhhh. I think she’s from Wales though, ahaha.

      • January 26, 2012 at 3:15 pm

I know Sophie Dee, didn’t know she was from the UK. Her big blue eyes are kinda creepy, but those tits are great. Not familiar with Delta White though.

Never heard of this movie but it does sound like something I would like. Will be looking for it on Netflix. I don’t know about anyone else but I enjoy when you do reviews outside of wrestling. You should consider reviewing more movies, albums, maybe even videogames in the future. I also appreciate that you kept spoilers to a minimum.

    • January 26, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Yeah, at first I was just going to recap the movie and give opinions, but I decided against it just in case someone wanted to see it. A review shouldn’t be a recap, but it should either sell you on a movie or warn you that it sucks. I’m not sure if I’ll do more movie reviews though, I just REALLY liked this movie and thought I would recommend it.
